Career Hunter Strategy & Resources

That time again, eh? This section delivers the definitive best practices approach to those ready to roll up their sleeves and solve this job hunt thing once and for all.

I Got the Job!

The first thing I ever printed off my very first computer was a resume for a friend. It not only captured that first heart-warming "I GOT THE JOB" phone call, it also created the "I HATE MY NEW JOB!" panic call, followed immediately by the "PLEASE UPDATE MY RESUME" Starbucks delivered right to my home (large Pike black please).

This good intention of mine quickly became a life sentence of resume slavery that initiated many interesting career strategy discussions over the years. To date I've helped over 85 friends in need with some whose resumes are now version 9. Somewhere back around the 40 mark, I was was invited to design and deliver a one day "Job Hunter's Workshop" to three consecutive graduating classes at Algonquin Technology Institute (ATI). This initiative to improve student job placement stats for ATI worked well and further honed my skills at conveying tried and true methodologies developed by the best minds in this space.

The Correct Job Hunting Strategy

There are two types of job hunt. First is the usual WRONG approach where you loose your job, PANIC, assume a fetal position of "job beggar", then start firing your resume out there like buckshot hoping to hit anything that finds the immediate fix. VOILA! Another shitty job.

The 2nd is the CORRECT, systematic approach where you:

  1. Take TIME to figure out who you are and what you're meant to do > WORKSHEET
  2. GO HARD on industry research to find the best possible solution to call home
  3. Formalize your formal and informal NETWORKS > WORKSHEET
  4. Use that network to get to the KEY DECISION MAKER
  5. ACE the interview > WORKSHEET
  6. NEGOTIATE effectively > WORKSHEET
  7. BUILD your empire.

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE. While at first glance this approach may seem laborious, it's really truly the only guaranteed way to get the result you want. DON'T BE LAZY. Done right, it avoids you repeating that running 6-months flat-out on a new initiative only to cry,  "I HATE MY JOB" (then calling me again). Slow down. BREATH. Get to work!
